Teeth Whitening
Your teeth can naturally lose their shine over time. This can be caused by certain foods and habits that can stain your teeth and cause them to look dark and discoloured. If this has happened to you and you want to teeth whitening, Yonge Eglinton Dental can help.
Why come to a dentist for teeth whitening?
At-home teeth whitening products are readily available at drug stores, but they are not as effective as teeth whitening performed by a dental professional. Also, some in-store products exaggerate their claims; resulting in disappointing results which can damage your teeth.
What causes teeth to change colour?
Teeth will naturally discolour over time. This is a natural part of the aging process. In some instances, the white enamel shell on our teeth thins out which exposes the yellow-coloured dentin behind the enamel. Also, coffee, red wine and tobacco will also change the colour of teeth over time. A round of treatments can reverse some of this discolouration.
The in-office teeth whitening procedure
Your dentist or hygienist will apply a bleaching gel made up of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to the front surface of your teeth. Then they will apply a curing light or laser to activate the bleaching agent. The gel is left on the teeth between 45 and 60 minutes. The ingredients in whitening agents have been used for years. While they might make your teeth feel sensitive or tingly at first, the feeling will subside shortly.

The disadvantage of teeth whitening
Teeth whitening can cause sensitivity in patients and the results can degrade over time. To combat this, we will provide you with customized trays to manage any post-operative sensitivity. These trays will also be used to periodically touch up your teeth to maintain the results achieved by the whitening process.

Teeth Whitening Q&A
The procedure is very safe — especially when administered by a dental professional in our office. It will not affect your enamel, gums, fillings or any other dental work in your mouth. Precautions are taken to ensure that there is absolutely no harm done to your teeth or gums. The only difference will be a brighter, whiter and more confident smile.
With proper home care, regular visits to the dentist, and regularly maintaining the results with your at-home trays, you may never need an additional round. However, if it is required, your dentist or hygienist will be able to tell you when you should book another whitening appointment.
Yes you can. We can whiten individual teeth, a group of teeth, an entire arch (top or bottom teeth) or all the teeth in your mouth.
Whitening procedure is not recommended for:
- people under 16 years of age because the nerve of the tooth is still – enlarged and whitening could cause it to become sensitive
- pregnant or nursing women
- people with sensitive teeth
- people with allergies to peroxide
- people with active dental decay
No, because these have no enamel to whiten. In general, it is best to whiten your teeth prior to placement of any of these prostheses.
Yes, dead teeth (those that have undergone a root canal) can be whitened through a slightly different process called non-vital bleaching which whitens the tooth from the inside out.
Activated charcoal is a popular at-home teeth whitening tool. It binds to stains and plaque and when it is removed, it takes those stains with them. It is important to note that activated charcoal will not whiten deeply stained or naturally yellowing teeth.
The cost will depend on the state of your teeth and the length of time that has elapsed since your last hygiene visit. When scheduling an appointment, our reception staff can provide you with an approximate estimate for teeth whitening. If you would like, we can also send an estimate to your insurer to determine the extent of coverage for your whitening.
