The Advantages of Storage Phosphor Digital X-Ray Systems

At Yonge Eglinton Dental, we use a storage phosphor digital X-ray system.  This method uses intraoral plates coated with a crystalline emulsion to make x-rays. Once the image is captured, the plate is placed into a laser scanner, which processes the image and sends it to a computer screen.

Storage phosphor technology is superior to traditional x-rays in many ways:

Less radiation

Digital imaging sensors are more sensitive than film. This means less radiation is required to produce an image. In fact, radiation from digital X-rays can be as little as 10 percent of the exposure with film-based x-rays. This is especially important as our professional mandate is to keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).

Electronic records

The dental images produced by digital x-ray systems are easily stored in electronic patient files. It’s simple and quick to transfer these digital images to patients, other specialists and insurance companies without a loss in quality. This can reduce treatment disruption and speeds up dental insurance reimbursements. As well, unlike with film, your digital dental records won’t deteriorate over time.

Fast results

Digital x-rays require little processing time, so results can be viewed almost immediately. As well, the images can be manipulated to improve contrast and detail. With conventional x-rays, the film processing takes up valuable time and no enhancements are possible.

Storage Phosphor is More Environmentally friendly

With no need for lead foil, chemical processing and the disposal of hazardous wastes traditional film imaging requires, digital dental x-rays are a very eco-friendly choice.

Improved diagnostics

The superior image quality of digital x-rays can better reveal small areas of decay between teeth and under fillings, gum disease, abscesses, cysts, bone infections and more. Early detection and treatment of these problems can save you time, discomfort and improve outcomes.

Better explanations

Extra features like 3D rendering, contrasting, colourizing, sharpness, flip and zoom can aid in the explanation of your condition.  Images of problem areas can be shown on a computer screen which can be helpful in explaining the problem and the treatment options available.

We’d be happy to let you know more about the advantages of storage phosphor digital x-rays and even show you the machine. Ask us at your next appointment.
